Kennesaw, GA Week 10

Hello from Georgia!
This week..... has been quite eventful.
So our apartment is a small one bedroom, one bathroom apartment. When
Sister Kafu came, she felt like the beds were too crammed in our
bedroom, so we moved them all into our living room, and we moved all
of our desks and study supplies into the bedroom.
On Monday night, around 12:20 am, Sister Kafu and I were awakened by
an urgent knock at the door! We both shot to the door and looked
through the peep hole only to see a man with a backpack on. We were
both freaked out. He then knocked again, and we heard him mess with
our lock. We thought he was trying to break in! I grabbed the phone
and called 911. The man left. Sister Castleton finally woke up when I
was talking to 911. The police came and scanned the area, and he was
no where to be found. Sister Kafu, Sister Castleton, and I couldn't
sleep and just stayed up after the police left, as if we were waiting
for "the next thing". We called our district leaders, our mission
president, and our zone leaders. The zone leaders where the only one
who picked up. They were ready to have us go stay at their apartment
and they were going to go stay with a member. But, we didn't have the
car. At 2 am, a note was then slipped under our door. I immediately
called 911 again. They told us not to look at the note and let the
police take care of it. When the police came, the policeman was
holding our keys and asked us if they were ours. Turns out, we had
accidentally left our keys in the door when we'd brought our bikes in.
Our neighbor was just trying to be a good neighbor and return our keys
to us! The note said, "Found your keys. I took them just incase
someone with less than good intentions came through here. I leave for
work at 8. Here's my number for when you want to get them."
We felt like complete idiots. Well I did at least! I'm so glad
President didn't answer his phone then! I would have felt so
embarrassed for waking up our mission president for something that was
a complete misunderstanding stemmed from our irresponsibility.
We are just happy to know that our neighbors are good people and
looking out for us!
The next morning, we moved all the beds back into the bedroom, and all
the desks into the living room.
This living situation makes much more sense! Haha
We have had so many miracles this week. President Bennion has begun to
emphasize working with less actives in our mission. Our mission has
been one of the only tracting missions left, but with the iPads, we
have been moving away from that. It's really helpful for us because
our Branch has 94 people total and of those 94, 48 are less active,
and that leaves only 28 active. Plus, summer term just ended this
week, so contacting on campus isn't very effective because no one is
there.
On Monday, when we went to the Walmart, there was an employee
looking at us kind of funny. So I walked up to him and asked him to
show us where the m&ms were. As he was walking us to the m&ms, he told
us that he had joined the church 2 years earlier in Indiana, but he
moved here a year ago and fell away and that he was trying to become
active again. He had started reading the Book of Mormon again just the
week prior! We were able to meet with him that week and he came to
church! It was great! He loved it and the branch was so welcoming!
Throughout the week we have been trying to call less actives and on
wednesday, a member was nice enough to drive us on what we call "The
Hunt", which is where we drive out to less active's homes and try to
get their stories. On Thursday we had Zone conference. I was able to
get my packages! President talked to us about how he wants us working
with our members more, and in particular, working with our less
actives more. He is having us use our LDS tools to organize everyone
into  lists- Active, less active, no idea, do not contact, and part
member (which we call technically active, because we aren't working
with family units).
After zone conference, we had exchanges. Sister Holden joined Sister
Castleon and me. She was great because she had just been transferred
out of UGA! We contacted that night on campus. On Friday, we worked on
calling less actives. One of our less actives is actually a ward
missionary! and He agreed to meet with us on Saturday. He then came to
church on Sunday as well!
We also were able to meet with Sylvestre, our one investigator, and he
too came to church!
Our apartment had some eery feelings after Monday. Sister Castleton
recieved a priesthood blessing, and so did I. On Sunday morning, we
had our district leader and his companion dedicate our apartment. I
also emailed President Bennion, and He and Sister Bennion came out to
our apartment yesterday. We will be moving to another apartment
complex next Monday.
It's been interesting, as we have begun to have success in this area,
how there seemed to be a lot of opposition to where we stay. Our whole
purpose as missionaries is to build the Kingdom of God; satan's whole
purpose is to tear it down. He came to Joseph Smith, before God the
Father and the Son appeared to him. I now understand why as
missionaries we are asked to memorize "The Standard of Truth": "...The
standard of truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the
work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies
may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth
boldly, nobly and independent, till it has penetrated every continent,
visited ever climb, swept every country, and sounded in every ear,
till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the great Jehovah
shall say the work is done." (History of the church, Volume 4, page
540) Heavenly Father is going to accomplish His work no matter what! I
feel so grateful to be a part of it!
I think the one of the main lessons Heavenly Father wants His
missionaries to learn is to completely rely on Him. This isn't our
work; this isn't my branch; it's His. It's only by wholly relying on
Him that we can accomplish it.
I love you all!!!
Love,
Sister Wallis

Kennesaw, GA week 9 HOT!

Hello!!!
Here are just a few of the things I have learned this week:
Atlanta is HOT.
I knew that. I just assumed US=AC= Problem solved. Didn't ever think
I would have to bike all day!!!! I feel like such a whimp, but
sometimes that is the hardest part of my day- leaving the AC to get on
a bike.... It is so humid we literally wake up with condensation on
our windows. You just sweat. All the time.
I think the Lord is giving me a great lesson in humility.
It's one thing to be in hot, humid weather when you can wear normal
clothes, or even swim! and drive an AC car. It's an entirely different
story to be on bike in church clothes.

Georgia has some serious Southern Storms...
So, when I complained to Him about the heat,  He sent the rain.
YUP.
On Saturday we were having dinner with a member at Cracker Barrel, (so
cliche, right? Georgia is Very country. But that's another point:) and
when it came time for the spiritual thought, it was so loud we decided
to go outside. Right as we are reading our scripture, some lightning
cracked the sky! We immediately just told him the scripture and
committed him to read it on his own time, because we were on bike and
knew that we had to go ASAP. It started raining as we were unlocking
our bikes, but as soon as we were riding, the flood gates opened! Its
funny, I forgot how real flash floods really are. It's actually fun to
be like, " I REMEMBER THIS WEATHER!" We were drenched. Literally
soaked. and we were on our bikes for only 20 minutes.

Outside of Atlanta is Country
On Saturday we got to go to a baptism for one of Sister Kafu's
investigators. So because Sister Kafu is a Sister Training leader, she
and her companion took over the area of the sister's who were in the
car accident. One investigator was particularly close to those
Sisters, so Sister Kafu and her companion grew really close to her as
they helped her through her grief and helped her continue learning
about our church and eventually make the decision to be baptized. It
was really special and neat that we got to go.
To get to go, we had to have a member and an investigator come with
us, and provide the ride.
It was about an hour's drive, but of course we got lost when they had
construction on the train tracks and the DETOUR signs were ghetto
sheets of paper with the word "DETOUR" spray painted painted on them.... It
was also quite the wildlife experience! We saw goats, and cows, and
horses.
I LOVE MY MISSION.
It is just so cute.

According to 3 witnesses + Snap Chat, We are attractive.
Last week our wonderful ward mission leader advertised us to the
branch by saying, "So we have Sister Wallis and her new companions and
they are very attractive so you should bring your friends to them and
they will get a lot of investigators on campus"
What?
He's from Nigeria.
We are giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Then when we were trying to get to know our member from the Congo, who
feeds us every week, he told us that he likes to feed the missionaries
because we are very attractive.
What if we were fat and ugly missionaries! Would we be fed?!
And third, we have our other investigator who always tells us we are
attractive. and He took Snap chat Selfies with us and posted it on his
story (which we figured is very good advertising) and he then told us
that everyone was snapping him back asking who we were because we were
all so "attractive".
So good job Mom and Dad. Your genetics are getting us food and investigators!
haha :)

I love being a missionary. It's the best calling. I am learning so
much- I feel like it is a very refining process. My companions are
amazing. They are so diligent and work so hard. It has been great!
We have been focusing a lot on the Book of Mormon, and reading with
our members and companions the first and last two paragraphs of the
introduction:

"The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the
Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with ancient inhabitants of
the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel....We
invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in
their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal
Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true. Those who pursue
this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and
divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost. (See Moroni 10:3–5.)
Those who gain this divine witness from the Holy Spirit will also come
to know by the same power that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the
world, that Joseph Smith is His revelator and prophet in these last
days, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the
Lord’s kingdom once again established on the earth, preparatory to the
Second Coming of the Messiah."

How cool is it that the Book literally asks us to ask God about it! We
encourage questioning, and as missionaries, we are just guides to help
people discover the truth for themselves!
I love the Book of Mormon. It is such a powerful book. It has taught
me so much about our Savior and the atonement. I know that it is true.
It has guided me when I've needed guidance and has comforted me when
I've needed comfort. I love it, and I highly encourage daily reading
of it!
(I am actually reading it aloud in Spanish now and am hoping to finish
it by august! eep.) I feel so lucky that my whole purpose is to invite
and help others "Come unto Christ". The Book of Mormon is so crucial
to this. It is another Testament of Jesus Christ, and a part of it's
whole purpose is to testify to us that "Jesus Christ is the Savior of
the world". I know that Jesus Christ lives. He is my Savior and
Redeemer. I know that He know me personally, and He loves me. He
suffered for me so that I can not only repent, but that my burdens can
be made light. I love that I get to share this message every day.
As I strive to emulate Him in everything I do, especially as a
full-time representative, I am learning so much. It has been
incredibly humbling, but I needed some humility. I always do. :)

I love you so much! It looks like you are having a blast!
Love,
Sister Wallis

Kennesaw, GA - Week 8

 Martha and Robert saying goodbye
 Madeleine and Rosemary

 Georgia sunrise!
Sunrise photo of our district prior to transfers.
Yep- we're riding bikes!
Hello!
Every week honestly is so crazy. So much happens that it doesn't feel like a week, more like a year each week, but at the same time it's always "I can't believe I'm already...." etc. So weird.
On Monday morning we received the call for Transfers! Sis Hanks was sent to UGA campus, and Sis Patterson was staying to take over Kennesaw, and I am still here in Big shanty!
Monday: Sister Hanks said goodbye to everyone. Hence the pictures.
So the first picture is Rosemary. She just cracks me up.
Oh, and when she said goodbye to Sister Hanks, it was literally like watching a love scene or something because Sister Hanks was trying to leave, but Rosemary was hugging her, and ran out to the car even when we were all in the car  to kiss sister hank's forehead... again..... and then she stood in the doorway and watched until we were away.
It was hilarious!
Then we said goodbye to Martha and Robert. Martha is also a recent convert. Her husband isn't a member, and isn't gung-ho about taking lessons, but he made Sister Hanks a bench! and as you can see from the sweet picture, they really cared about her! They are the sweetest, cutest couple. Isn't their house so cute?! They even have a garden in the back! and When they fed us dinner, they fed us pork and bean casserole. HOW PERFECT?!
Tuesday: Sister Hanks said goodbye to more people while on splits with a girl from Kennesaw. Sister Patterson and I then worked with Big Shanty.
Wednesday: Transfer Day!
We had to drive to a church building and pick up Sister Kafu and Sister Castleton, while Sister Hanks left with her companion and Sister Patterson got hers!
I love my companions. I can tell that they are truly converted to the gospel and they teach me so much every day.
It's great.
As soon as we got back to the apartment, we moved all the furniture around to better accommodate 3 people.... (because I'm just destined to have trios apparently)  and I honestly like moving furniture around after transfers because then it changes everything up and makes me feel more ready for the next chapter of my mission, so you could say. I know it definitely helped with the Emergency Transfer, because I missed my trainer so much and it was so weird to not have her with me!
Thursday: We set the game plan for the area. So because I'm new (in my first 12 months), and Spanish, I get 4 hours of study: Personal, Companion, Language, and 12 week. Then we get an additional hour to update the area book. So that's five hours out of our day right there! We sometimes break it up though so we aren't just sitting in the apartment the whole morning.
Friday: You'll never believe it! I rode the bike! We rode bikes! Since we are no longer in Chaos, we no longer have the car... Sister Kafu got me on the bike! and we wound up riding, looking for a referral for about 3 hours. Bike shorts would be much appreciated because the next day, we were SO SORE. But it got me to love where I am! It is so cute and country! I love Georgia! I love it so much honestly.
On Saturday I was left in Charge! So Sister Kafu is a sister training leader, and so is Sister Stenquist now (they are solo training leaders...) so they went on exchange. That left me with Sister Castleton, and Sister Russelll. I was terrified. Well, exchanges kind of freak me out because I feel like I have to make an itinerary for the whole day or otherwise whoever I'm with is going to get bored or think I'm lazy! (It's probably moreso that I'm just not used to making all the plans because I am still technically a new misisonary....) We had 2 lessons in the morning, then we went back to the apartment for lunch. I then did my language study and worked on my talk for Sunday.  We then walked to our branch (because none of us are approved to drive- I'm not because I'm new, Sister Castleton doesn't have her license, and Sister Russell just can't. So we walked to the branch and had a lesson with our investigator Blake. I felt so bad, but the spirit told me to have a lesson with him! Blake is a hard investigator. It's interesting because every lesson we threaten to drop him, because he basically winds up trying to prove that the church is not true, but then he will show a lot of spiritual progress and he keeps commitments.... It's weird. But he can just be intimidating, and I felt so bad because here I'd brought these super sweet and tender sisters to one of the most complex people I have ever met. But WOAH! Sister Castleton was AWESOME at teaching him and was just bearing her testimony and explaining things perfectly, and then sister russell hadn't been saying anything to him the whole lesson until she spoke up, as I was trying to drop him by telling him we can have meals with  you, we like you and respect you, but if you are not sincere about these lessons and actually want to know the truth, then we can't meet with you anymore, and he was saying "Well I do want to know if what you are teaching is true" and Sister Russell spoke and boy was she bold! She then just said, "Then can you lose all the pride and have the humility to admit that what we are teaching you is true?" The spirit works in mysterious ways. I was thinking about it, because there are some people who you could expect to be bold because of their strong personalities (like me.... ) but I couldn't ever say something like that because I don't think people would listen to someone like me if I said that. But because Sister Russell and Sister Castleton are so sweet and have such tender spirits about them, people do listen when they are bold!
This is why we have companions.
Anywho....
I spoke in church yesterday on the thirteen articles of faith. It went well, I think... I wound up not speaking as long as I thought, but I figured as missionaries we are supposed to "condense and intense" so....
Good morning brothers and sisters. I am sister Wallis, one of your missionaries! Today we are focusing on what members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believe. Sometimes this can be a daunting subject: there are a lot of rumors and distorted truths about what we believe. Thankfully, we have the thirteen articles of faith, found in the back of the pearl of great price, to summarize what we believe. Our beloved apostle L. Tom Perry spoke on the doctrines and principles contained in the thirteen articles of faith in the October 2013 General conference, and much of what I have to say today is based on that talk. He divided the thirteen articles of faith into five sections, to break up our beliefs and better explain them.
The first section consists of the first four articles of Faith. They simply state our beliefs of the Godhead and the basic doctrines of Jesus Christ. To begin, the first article of faith reads:
"1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost."
We believe in God! Mosiah 4:9 in the Book of Mormon Reads "Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend."  We believe there is a God! and he is He is our loving, eternal, Heavenly Father.
He is a just God:
The second article of faith is "We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression" Our Heavenly Father does not hold us accountable for the fall of Adam. We believe that everyone is born pure and innocent, but throughout this life, we believe that we will all sin. We are held accountable for our sins, but While our Heavenly Father is just, He is also merciful and loves us infinitely:
John 3:16 reads:
16 ¶For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3)
This brings us to the third article of Faith: "3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel." Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins. It is through Him that we can be washed clean. He is the way we can return to live with our Heavenly Father. This begins with our belief in Faith. The fourth article of Faith is "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ" We believe that when we have sincere faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we not only believe his gospel we live it. Second principle of the gospel is Repentance, followed by the ordinances of "Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins" just as our savior was baptized, and lastly, the "Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost." When we have faith in our savior Jesus Christ, we do not let his sacrifice be in vain. We use the atonement to repent, and we come unto Him through baptism when we covenant to take His name upon us, to keep His commandments and to always remember Him. In return our Heavenly Father grants us a remission of our sins: they are washed away clean; a chance to be born again, and be made new; and the gift of the Holy ghost. Our constant companion who helps lead and guide us personally, so that we can return to live with our Heavenly Father after this life.
This basic doctrine is the same Doctrine our Savior Jesus Christ taught when He walked the Earth. This leads us to our next section of the Articles of faith which consists of the fifth and sixth articles. The sixth article of Faith is that "We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth." This is because the priesthood power, the same priesthood power that the prophets and apostles had in the Bible has been restored on the earth today. As apostle L. Tom Perry stated. "It was necessary for the priesthood to be restored before the true church of Jesus Christ could be organized" therefore, as the fifth article of faith states, "We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof." That authority is the priesthood, which has been restored through the prophet Joseph Smith.
The next three articles of Faith, 7. 8 & 9, are the external resources we have here on earth to help us throughout our Mortal Journey. The seventh article of faith talks about spiritual gifts our Heavenly Father has given us to help guide us, as well as protect us from evil here on earth. The 8th article of faith reads, "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. We also believe the Book of Mormon to be  the word of God." The scriptures are another guide. Elder Perry Promised, "if we read carefully the word of God, He will reveal our path back to eternal life." Our last resource is our church leaders. Number 9 states, "We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God." We believe that God reveals through prophets, seers, and revelators that hold the restored priesthood authority. Our church leaders such as President Murdock, Brother Brookes, and Brother Huffman, are additional resources of guidance to return to him.
The next three articles talk about missionary work. Our church is well known for it's missionaries and our emphasis on missionary work. This is because in the 10th article, 10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory." We are preparing for the second coming! However, as we spread the gospel, it is important that we remember that we also believe in religious freedom: We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may." Freedom of religion was the principle upon this country was founded. The first pilgrims came to this country so that they may worship as they please. We honor and value the right to freedom of religion for all people. As we are spreading the gospel all over the world, "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law." We honor and respect each nation we enter.
The Last article of faith talks about aspirational attributes: It reads "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." We strive to emulate our Savior Jesus Christ in all that we do. As we strive to be good Christian people, we are striving to become like Him. We are not perfect, and will never be in this life, but it is through Him and his ultimate sacrifice that we may one day become perfected like Him. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior. I know that He paid the price for not only my sins, but your sins and the sins of all of Heavenly Fathers Children. He knows each of us personally. He loves us so much. I know that this is His church. That this is the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I know that Joseph Smith was aa true prophet of God, called to restore this church. I know that He translated the Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ. It is true. It is so dear and precious to me because it has only strengthened my relationship with our Savior. He is my best friend. I love Him so much and am so grateful for all that He does for us. I leave these things with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
That's it, for my talk

I love my mission and I love my new companions so much. They really are amazing and are teaching me so much! Something that I think Heavenly Father wants all of His missionaries know how to do, is how to fully rely on him! FROG: Fully Rely On God! It requires humility fully rely on Him. WE are't the teachers. The spirit is. And only HE knows what is going to help our investigators. Therefore, WE aren't the ones deciding who/what/how to teach- we should be relying on HIM fully to help our investigators and the work! It can almost be difficult sometimes because it's easy to think that we are smart and  we know how to do things, but really it's not up to us. It doesn't really matter how many qualifications we had before our missions- it just up to us to rely on the Lord. A great missionary is one who fully relies on the Lord, Because after all, this is HIS work. Anything that happens in Big Shanty isn't because of us and our qualifications, it is really just the Lord working through us. We were humble enough to allow Him to do His work.
There's this great story in Preach my gospel:
“I always remember two young men who served in my mission. One was a superstar. He was educated. He was bright. He was quick. He was a little arrogant. We had another who was a sign painter. He came from a sign shop with very little education, but he knew his inadequacies and he relied on the Lord. When he prayed, you knew he was talking with the Lord. It wasn’t a rote thing, it was a conversation and that young man accomplished wonders while the other young man went through the motions. The power that was in the one and the absence of power in the other was so apparent. Call upon the Lord. He has extended the invitation, and He will answer” (Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley [1997], 469).
Yup.
Today is my 2 month mark as a missionary! That's crazy. 16 more to go! haha
It's been great to here from you! I love it so much!
I love you!

Kennesaw, GA - Week 8

Hello!
SO REAL NORMAL TRANSFERS!!!
I am staying in Big Shanty, and will still be in a trio! I get 2 new
companions! That's 7 companions! and then 5 trainers! Sister Kafu and
Sister Castleton. I haven't met Sister Castleton yet, so I can tell
you about her next week.
Sister Hanks is going to UGA and Sister Patterson is taking over the
Kennesaw ward!
So Sister Patterson will move into the other apartment in our
apartment complex and she gets a new companion.
This week:
Tuesday: We had District meeting! And I got the case and keyboard!
YAY!!! (if you sent the other package to the mission office, I will be
able to get it on Wedesday... or next Tuesday for sure)
It was funny because for one of the trainings, the elder asked all the
missionaries who were on their first transfer, what their expectations
of a mission were and what they reallly were. Everyone just laughed at
mine because mine were:
Well, I was called Spanish... So should we start with the fact that it
never really clicked that I was staying in the US?! So I actually was
shocked every time our investigators have plumbing, or that I had
plumbing AND AC! (I blame Zoe Gibbs for that...) And besides that,
Instead of being sent Spanish speaking, I was sent English YSA. On a
college campus! I don't know how much further away from Spanish
speaking you can get than that... Oh, and THEN after 2 weeks they took
my trainer away from me, and I had to take over my area in a trio! and
then also work  in another area. So pretty much, I just don't even
expect anything anymore, because I just really never know what's going
to happen... LOL welcome to life!
Zone meeting was fun though because I got to see Sister Stenquist! and
we all then went out to lunch! It was super fun!
Wednesday: I had my first exchange! Sister Kafu is an STL (sister
training leader) and she came and joined me for 24 hours, Sister
Patterson went with Sister Kafu's companion, and Sister Hanks went on
splits with a girl from the Kennesaw ward.
So I can tell you about Sister Kafu! She is super cute and fun! She's
tongan and is a blast. She and Sister Hanks are good friends because
they served together (not as companions) in their first areas. It was
a lot of fun. I'm really excited!
For the Fourth of July we had breakfast with the Kennesaw ward, and
then we went to the food pantry, where we were able to make the video!
Then we had lunch with the Murdock's, then we cleaned the branch, then
we went to a barbecue with these 3 cute young families. They were
hilarious! It was like being in an episode of Friends, married!
So on Sunday's we've been attending the Kennesaw ward, because it
starts at 9, and then the Big Shanty ward, because it starts at 11. I
love Kennesaw. It reminds me so much of the Orchard Ward. Never a dull
moment!
In Big Shanty I bore my testimony on Christ's atonement and how HE is
the way. I talked about Moses and the children of Israel when the
firey serpents came the people asked Moses to pray for them to be
taken away. Instead of removing the serpents, or removing the trial,
the Lord provided a way for the people to be saved. He told Moses to
put a serpent on a staph and when the people were bitten, they just
had to look at the staph and they would be saved. He provided a way
for them to live. I compared this to 1 Nephi 3:7 and how it says that
the Lord provides a way to accomplish the trials He asks of us. That
was is our Savior Jesus Christ and His atonement. Heavenly Father
doesn't expect us to overcome trials on our own, in fact, He doesn't
want us to. He is our Father. He loves us. He wants us to turn to Him.
He is waiting for us to turn to Him. Turning to Him can be compared to
the children of Israel turning to the staph to be healed. It seems so
simple to just pray or read our scriptures that it almost makes us
wonder what good it would do. But those simple habits of sincere
prayer and scripture study, turning ourselves to Jesus Christ and His
atonement, are what enable us to accomplish anything the Lord asks of
us. Some of the children of Israel did turn to the staph and were
saved, but some didn't and perished. It sounds so silly to us, because
their means of salvation were so simple, but it is the same for us.
It's all about the basics. We have to ask ourselves, "Are we looking
at the staph? Are we turning to our Savior?" Our Heavenly Father has
not promised to remove the storms, but to hold our hands while we walk
through them. He is our loving Heavenly Father. He loves us so much. I
am so grateful to be involved in His work. It is so neat to think that
this is my job- this is what my time is completely devoted to right
now- HIM! I love it so much.
I love all of you and miss you!
